Finn Juhl Credenza
Finn Juhl, having honed his craft at the prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and under the guidance of architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, embarked on his solo design journey in 1945 by establishing his own design studio. Collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Voder, a partner since 1937, they stirred excitement at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural creations.
Expanding his horizons internationally, Juhl made his debut in the United States in 1951, showcasing his work at the esteemed Good Design exhibit in Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Moreover, he proudly represented Denmark by designing a meeting chamber at the United Nations Headquarters.
Drawing inspiration from the cubist movement and Goethe's color wheel, Juhl crafted the Finn Juhl Credenza in 1955. This masterpiece reflects its origins through its simple geometric forms, interlocking planes, and sliding doors adorned with six trays finished in varying hues of blue lacquer. The interior boasts two fixed shelves on the left and an open compartment adjacent to the tray storage on the right.Crafted with a walnut body and supported by a hand-burnished steel frame adorned with wooden feet, the credenza exudes a sense of lightness and elegance. Shipped fully assembled, this Danish-made masterpiece is a testament to Finn Juhl's expertise as both a trained architect and a self-taught furniture designer.
